About the project

Summer Branch Drop (SBD) is the failure and collapse of individual, healthy branches in full leaf. It usually occurs when there is no wind and after periods of prolonged drought or intense heat.

To date, SBD poses an incalculable risk to traffic safety, as no symptoms or warning signals can be recognized from the outside, for example, during tree inspections. With the current state of knowledge, the phenomenon can neither be satisfactorily explained nor predicted.

Considering the recurring years with large-scale or regionally summer droughts, it can be assumed that the problem of SBD will become increasingly important. This emphasizes the need for explanations and prevention methods in the interest of traffic safety.

To explain the phenomenon from a physiological point of view, various hypotheses have been proposed but none of them have been definitively proven.

This website was created by the SAG Baumstatik e. V. and primarily aims to collect data. With the help of your observations and data input, the goal is to collect as much information as possible about SBD incidents that have occurred and thus gain further insights into the causes.
